Getting Started
In the first week of the unit, children explore plants outside and they plant a variety of seeds and bulbs. They begin to notice the similarities and differences among plants. Children will:
- Explore plants outdoors to learn more about parts of plants
- Plant bean seeds and observe what happens
- Plant onion bulbs and observe what happens
- Listen to the read-aloud books The Carrot Seed and One Bean to learn more about what happens after seeds are planted
- Watch the Between the Lions show “The Carrot Seed” based on the book
- Watch the PEEP and the Big Wide World show “Peep Plants a Seed” to make connections to their own explorations planting seeds
- Be introduced to the letter “Ss,” the letter sound /s/, and the word seed
