Week 1: Seeds and Sprouts

Getting Started

In the first week of the unit, children are introduced to the idea that animals, including humans, eat many different plants and parts of plants. Children will:

  • Grow and eat sprouts over the week
  • Continue to identify, talk, and think about plants and plant parts
  • Classify edible plants as either root, stem, or leaf plants
  • Compare indoor and outdoor plants, and collect and sort plants they find outdoors
  • Explore plants in their environment that show evidence of being eaten by animals
  • Listen to the read-aloud book Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds, a story about farm animals that try new foods, and watch a Between the Lions video of the story
  • Explore Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert, a book that shows the many varieties of fruits and vegetables from A to Z
  • Be introduced to the letter “Ff,” the letter sound /f/, and the word farm
