Week 2: Eating Roots and Leaves

Getting Started

This week, children eat root and leaf vegetables as they continue to explore the idea that many of the foods we eat come from plants. Children will:

  • Explore, taste, and compare root and leaf vegetables
  • Describe vegetables using sensory descriptive words
  • Listen to the read-aloud book The Ugly Vegetables by Grace Lin in which a girl and her mother grow a garden full of Chinese vegetables, to be introduced to the idea of growing one’s own food
  • Revisit Chicks and Salsa by Aaron Reynolds and the Between the Lions video of the story about farm animals that make new foods using plants from the farm’s garden
  • Be introduced to the letter “Vv,” the letter sound /v/, and the word vegetable
