Week 2: Eating Roots and Leaves

Learning Goals

Children will:

STEM

  • Begin to understand that plants provide an important food source for many animals, including humans
  • Begin to understand that we eat certain leaves and roots
  • Begin to understand that families eat food from plants, but they may eat food from different plants or prepare it in different ways
  • Begin to identify plant parts, including roots, stems, and leaves
  • Talk about how plants that grow in soil have some parts that are underground and some that are above ground
  • Compare and contrast indoor and outdoor plants
  • Identify their favorite plants to eat and graph the results
  • Share, discuss, and record their observations

ELA

Children will:

  • Recognize, match, and form uppercase and lowercase “Vv” (Alphabet Awareness)
  • Identify the first letter (“Vv”) in context of a word (vegetable) (Alphabet Awareness)
  • Identify parts of a book (Concepts of Print)
  • Identify beginning sounds in words and produce words with the same beginning sound (/v/) (Phonological Awareness)
  • Repeat alliterative sentences (Phonological Awareness)
  • Engage in active viewing and listening (Listening and Speaking)
  • Build understanding through text-to-self and text-to-text connections (Comprehension)
  • Interpret illustrations from a story (Comprehension)
  • Be exposed to new concept vocabulary in cross-curricular ways (Vocabulary)

Children will:

  • Begin to understand that many people and families eat food from plants, but they may eat food from different plants or prepare it in different ways
  • Participate in one-on-one, small-group, and large-group conversations/discussions
  • Begin to initiate, organize, and participate in independent activities
  • Understand and respect group roles, rules, and expectations
  • Begin to understand the importance of helping others
  • Begin to understand that it is important to respect the environment and not to harm plants and other living things
