Week 3: Building to Size

Learning Centers

“Xx” Hangings

Have children make “Xx” hangings by gluing together craft sticks. Focus their attention on the size of the craft sticks to make an uppercase and a lowercase “Xx.”

Letter Sort (“Xx”)

Sort the letters, using the target letter “Xx” and other letters children have previously learned (Cc, Mm, Pp, Ss).

My Kind of House

Invite children to draw the house they would like to build. Have them dictate or write labels or captions.

Parking Garage

Ask children to make a parking garage big enough to park some toy cars of various sizes.

Independent and Partner Reading, Unit 6, Week 3

Have children select their favorite version of The Three Little Pigs to read on their own or with a partner. Have them explain why it is their favorite version.

One-on-One Reading: ABC Books

Encourage a child to select an ABC book to read with him or her.

Hardware Store

Set up a pretend hardware store with tools and building materials. Talk with children about what tools are needed to build certain things.

Adding Houses

Measure the lengths of objects by counting the number of blocks along the objects.

Letter Molds (“Xx”)

Trace over the lowercase and uppercase “Xx.” Have children press uppercase and lowercase “Xx” molds into the sand.

Build a Castle

Have children build sand castles to size for a group of toy figures.

Building It

View and discuss the video of an actual construction site.

The House I Would Build…

Have children use the pictures they drew in the Art Center to write or dictate sentences about the house they would build.
