Learning Goals

STEM

Children will:

  • Understand that different objects make different sounds
  • Learn that sounds can vary in volume (loud and quiet)
  • Compare and contrast sounds, and categorize them by volume
  • Understand that sounds have a source
  • Understand how they use their senses to investigate sound
  • Make connections between common scientific skills and their own explorations of sound

ELA

Children will:

  • Recognize, match, and form upper and lowercase letters (“Nn” and “Qq”) (Alphabet Knowledge)
  • Identify letters (“Nn” and “Qq”) in context of words (night and quiet) (Alphabet Knowledge)
  • Continue to learn to turn pages, one at a time; front to back (Concepts of Print)
  • Clap and count syllables in names and words (Phonological Awareness)
  • Listen to and produce rhyming words (Phonological Awareness)
  • Engage in active viewing and listening (Listening and Speaking)
  • Listen to, develop understanding of meaning, and use new concept vocabulary about sound: city, country, high, listen, loud, louder, low, quiet, soft, softer, sound, volume (Vocabulary)

Children will:

  • Continue to follow directions
  • Recognize when it is appropriate to speak quietly to show respect for others
  • Begin to understand how sound volume affects them and others
  • Continue to understand how to share and discuss their work as they build confidence in their abilities and ideas
  • Take pride in their work and recognize the ability of others
  • Practice self-regulation during indoor and outdoor explorations
