Week 3: How Does It Sound?

Getting Started

In this last week of the unit on sound, children will continue to explore the different qualities of sound. This week voice, pitch, and volume will be a focus as children record their own voices and those of others around the school, and talk about the differences in the pitch and volume of a voice. During this week children will:

  • Begin to learn how to identify and change the sound qualities of their voices
  • Listen to audio recordings of their own voices and talk about the different qualities of each
  • Listen to video recordings of animal sounds and listen to animal sounds outdoors
  • Sing songs and listen to stories and poems about sound, including Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson, about the sounds animals make while finding warmth in a snoring, sleeping bear’s cave, and Oscar and the Bat: A Book About Sound by Geoff Waring, about a curious cat and a bat that knows a lot about sounds all around
  • Watch and hear the sounds of the story Bear Snores On come to life in the video Between the Lions “Bear Snores On”
  • Be introduced to the letter “Oo,” the letter sound /o/, and the word on
