Week 2: Make a Sound: Loud and Quiet

Getting Started

During the second week of the unit, children will continue to explore the world of sound. This week they will begin to recognize whether a sound is loud or quiet, and how to change the volume of sounds. During this week children will:

  • Classify sounds as loud or quiet, and explore materials that make loud or quiet sounds
  • Use different parts of their body (hands, feet, mouths, and legs) to make loud and quiet sounds
  • Go on a listening walk to explore sounds outdoors and track the source of outdoor sounds
  • Recite and write poems about sound
  • Learn about city sounds and country sounds as they make connections to the books Night in the Country by Paul Showers and City Lullaby by Marilyn Singer and to the video Between the Lions “Night in the Country”
  • Be introduced to the letters “Nn” and “Qq,” and the words night and quiet
