Week 1: Sounds All Around

Getting Started

In this three-week unit, children will be introduced to the world of sound. Children will begin to gain an understanding of the basic concepts of sound and an awareness of the sounds around them. During this first week children will:

  • Listen quietly to the sounds they hear indoors and outdoors
  • Go on listening walks to listen to, explore, observe, and create outdoor sounds
  • Be introduced to the idea that every sound has a source
  • Begin to understand that sounds follow one direction
  • Track a sound to its source
  • Explore making tapping and scraping sounds with different materials 
  • Listen to The Listening Walk by Paul Showers, about a girl and her dad on a listening walk, and Max Found Two Sticks by Brian Pinkney, about a boy and his love of sounds
  • Be introduced to the letter “Ss” and the word sound
