Week 4: Color and Light

Getting Started

In this last week of the unit, children will continue their investigation of color in the world around them and begin to explore color and light. During this week children will:

  • Explore and begin to understand how light passes through clear and colored transparent materials, prisms, and water drops
  • Continue to explore how an object changes color when viewed through a transparent colored material
  • Explore mixing different shades of skin colors
  • Discuss The Colors of Us by Karen Katz, a story about different colors of skin, and Red Is a Dragon by Roseanne Thong, a story about colors in the life of a young Chinese-American girl
  • Watch the show Between the Lions “It’s Red! It’s Green!” which focuses on color and how things are not always what they seem to be
  • Compare paint mixing experiences to children who are mixing paints in the live-action video Peep and the Big Wide World “Mixing Paint”
  • Be introduced to the letter “Rr” and the word red
