Learning Centers

Letter Shaping (“Jj”), (“Ll”)

Display the letter “Jj” card and show children how to use various materials to shape the uppercase and lowercase letters.  Repeat for letter “Ll.”

Fish for Letters (jazz)

Display the jazz word card and have children fish for the letters j, a, z, and z.  Then arrange the letters to make the word jazz.

Musical Murals

Play different types of music and have children paint to the music.  Display the paintings and the names of the artists.

Feel the Music

Play a piece of music and have children talk about how the music makes them feel.  Ask them to draw how they feel.

Road Tunnels

Invite children to build a road and tunnels structure. Explain that some roads go through tunnels sometimes so the roads can go underwater.

Independent and Partner Reading, Unit 4, Week 2

Encourage children to select a book that interests them and to look at the words and pictures on their own or with other children.

One-on-One Reading: Jazz Baby #3

Read aloud Jazz Baby to individuals or small groups. As you read, pause to encourage children to make connections between the story and their own lives.

Join the Band
 #2

Invite children to form their own band, like Lionel and Leona’s rooftop band.  Encourage children to name and talk about the different musical instruments.

Sort by Volume (Loud/Medium/Quiet)

Create a chart with three volume levels. Hold up a picture, ask someone to make the sound of it, and decide where to place that picture.

Letter Molds (“Jj”), (“Ll”)

Have children press“Jj” letter molds into the sand. Encourage them to use their fingers to make the letters. Repeat with the letter “Ll.”

“Sounds Like Fun” (PEEP game) #2

Demonstrate how to play the PEEP online game “Sounds like Fun.” Show children how to click on the animals to hear the sounds they make.

“Favorite Sounds” Class Book

Have children draw something that makes a favorite sound.  Ask children to dictate a caption. Tape all the pages together to create a class book.

Loud and Quiet Book

Have children make their own books about things that are loud and things that are quiet.  Children will share their book with the class on Day 5.
