Unit 2: Colors All Around

Sing “Sing, Sing, Sing with Me” to each child and have them join you in clapping out each child's name.

Discuss colors and the idea that light changes the appearance of a color. 

Have children explore what happens to light cast through different transparent objects.

Create a two-color hat and have children make predict what color they will see as you walk by.

Sing and act out a song about a hat of two colors.

Have children explore and discuss different colors of crayons and paints that resemble different colors of skin.

Write a group poem about different tones of skin color.

Have children identify words that begin with the letter “Rr.” 

Watch a video about the letter “Rr” and have the children look for the letter in the video.

Sing “Where Is?” to children and recognize each child by name.

Talk about rainbows and the colors of the rainbow.

Assist children as they create a rainbow using a bottle of water and light.

Watch a Between the Lions video about the color red.

Read about a young Chinese-American girl as she tells about the brightly colored objects of her Asian heritage.

Discuss traffic lights and play a game allowing children to "stop" on red and "go" on green. 

Read a poem focusing on the letter “Rr.” 

Help children recognize the letter “Rr” in their names.

Sing “Where Is?” while identifying each child by name.

Help children create their own rainbows using CDs.

Have children make and observe rainbows using water mist.
